1. New Bamboo Cutting Board
If your bamboo cutting board is a new one, then you will have to treat it first. Seal and condition the new untreated board using a food grade mineral oil. Take oil and apply with a clean rag. Using the cloth, rub across the board thoroughly.
Ensure you place the board in a straight position. Once you are done, leave it overnight to enable the oil set in. Why use oil to clean the new bamboo cutting board? Because it creates a shielding seal, which resists water, hinders splitting, and finally gives it a smooth and beautiful finish. Therefore, it’s important to always oil bamboo cutting board.
2. Washing the Bamboo Cutting Board
Don’t make the mistake of putting your board in the dishwasher, the reason being that the heat will spoil the protective oil coating in it.
Besides this, the board may be warped out. Apart from the heat, soaking the board in water can lead to warping too. To avoid staining, it is imperative after use to clean the board by using a Spatulas such as the Kitchen Utensil Set – 8 Piece Non-Stick Cooking Utensils & Spatulasto scrape off any food particles.
Then you can rinse the top of the board with water and mild dish soap. Avoid cleaning bamboo cutting board with a chemical cleaning agent. Always place the board in an erect position.
3. Cleaning Stubborn Stains
To remove any stain, don’t use any form of chemical cleaning agents, instead use baking soda or coarse salt.
- Use the Coarse Salt to cover the affected area. Using a sponge or wet cloth, rub the salt into the affected area. You can continue adding salt and repeat this process until you are satisfied that the stain is gone.
- Use baking soda and wipe the stained area with a damp cloth. For effective result, allow the baking soda to sit for some time before rinsing it and cleaning the board with a dry.
4. Maintaining and Deodorizing Bamboo Cutting Board
If your bamboo cutting board smells, to freshen it, scatter some quantity of salt on it. Talk half lemon and squeeze it while you rub across the surface of the board.
Allow it to settle for 2 hours; the salt and lemon mixture will penetrate and counteract the smells on the board. Rinse with water and dry with a clean cloth to take off any excess moisture.
5. Disinfecting a Bamboo Cutting Board
To reduce the possibility of cross-contamination, you should use a different board for meats and other food items.
One of the natural cleaning agents you can use is Vinegar. It has a solid antimicrobial and disinfectant property. Using one to one ratio, mix a solution of water and vinegar.
Soak a cloth in the mixture and rub through the board. Sprinkle baking soda through it while using a sponge to scrub any stained area.
Another alternative to disinfecting a bamboo cutting board is by using hydrogen peroxide solution. This solution should not exceed 3%.
Hydrogen peroxide solution is environmentally friendly, non-irritant, and works perfectly in disinfecting any surface. A word of caution, please don’t put hydrogen peroxide with vinegar in the same bowl. You should not use the same towel to apply the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide solution.
6. Restoring the Surface
To repair the surface of your bamboo cutting board (if it is dried), use a fine sandpaper to file the surface to make it smooth. Ensure you remove any dust and rinse with soapy water. Leave it to dry before applying mineral oil to recoat the bamboo.
7. Proper Storage
Store or hang it in a cool and dry place. Store it horizontally to reduce the risk of it bending. Also, don’t put it in areas with high humidity or basement to prevent mold growth.
